Ponte Vedra set a high
standard for its girls
soccer program on Saturday,
winning the Class 4A state
title in its first season
with a 1-0 penalty-kick
victory over Fort Lauderdale
Cardinal Gibbons.
The Sharks (25-3-4) endured
two scoreless overtimes
against the top-ranked team
in the National Soccer
Coaches Association of
America national poll before
playing to a 3-3 tie in
penalty kicks.
Then, Ponte Vedra keeper
Emily Vergo saved the
Chiefs’ next attempt to give
sophomore Jackie Hellett a
chance to win the match.
Hellett buried her shot in
the back of the net.
Hellett and Vergo were two
of six Sharks players to win
a state title last season
with the Nease girls soccer
team.
