2009-2010
SEASON
The 2010 Lady Chiefs
Lacrosse season finished with a district
record of 5-1 record after splitting a pair with St. Thomas and two
victories over Pine Crest. Cardinal
Gibbons
Junior Sarah Motta was selected the
Sun-Sentinel
Lacrosse Player of the Year. US Lacrosse
Academic All-Americans for 2010 are Sarah Motta, Lauren
Holsinger, Jenny Grant, Kiera Moran and Katherine Clementi.
The team was awarded the fourth highest team GPA in FHSAA
lacrosse with an overall GPA of 3.569, just slightly behind
winner Vero Beach at 3.599.
Lady Chiefs Soccer
finished the season on February 6, 2010 with a gut wrenching
loss to Merritt Island on PK's in the Regional
Final. The weather conditions were heavy rains all
afternoon, 55 degrees and strong winds out of the NW.
After a 30 minute delay the game began. Surprisingly
the rain stayed away for the entire game. The strong
winds of 20+ MPH made the evening a corner kick bonanza for
both sides. Neither team could convert through OT.
While the field was wet, nobody can say the field itself was
in poor condition. There was no mud or puddles on this
pitch.
In PK's, Gibbons went to the
line with Sarah Motta pounding her kick in the lower
90 with an upright goalie just watching and then
Gibbons' Macy Huskey and Ally
Buerosse
would bury their kicks;
however, with Merritt
Island up 4-3 heading into the final kicks in the first
group of five, Gibbons faced the end. Gibbons Jenny
Grant calmly placed her kick in the back of the net
tying it
at 4-4; however, Merritt Island
still had the last kick. Fortunately Merritt Island kicked a
weak ball directly at Haylee Shoaff who snatched it for the
good guys.... and the game was dead even after round one.
Luck ran out for the Lady Chiefs as the sixth and seventh
kicks failed and Merritt Island hammered home the game
winner. It was a season of ups and downs but the girls
can be proud of their strong record.
Graduating seniors include April
Ortenzo, Colleen Slattery, Haylee Shoaff, Ally Buerosse,
Stephanie Spurgeon, Renee
Beninate and Stephanie Booker. Congratulations seniors for
the great run over the past three seasons. You set a
new girls soccer record getting to Regional Finals for the
first time in school history in 2008, then you went to the
FHSAA championship game in 2009 and also managed to beat St.
Thomas for the first time and did so with a shutout.
